European Regulators Approve Boeing's Fixes for 787 Batteries

European regulators Tuesday approved Boeing Co.'s (BA) proposal to modify the lithium-ion batteries on its flagship 787 Dreamliner jet, clearing the way for Europe's carriers to fly the wide-bodied jets.The European Aviation Safety Agency said it "approved the design change of the Boeing 787-8 Auxiliary Power Unit battery, battery charger and battery enclosure installation...allowing it to return to service as soon as the modification is be installed."Flag carrier LOT Polish Airlines is the only European airline to have taken delivery of 787s, and the clearance will enable the airline to begin work on putting its two Dreamliners back in service, which Chief Executive Sebastian Mikosz has said is likely to happen in mid-June.EASA's approval comes just days after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration approved fixes on Boeing's jets after they were ordered grounded Jan. 16 by aviation regulators worldwide following two incidents involving the jet's batteries.Boeing recently completed g...
