Qantas Cuts 500 Jobs; Shuts Maintenance Base

(QAN.AU) said Monday it will terminate 500 engineering jobs to adapt to modern technology as part of a wider effort to stem losses at its ailing international flights unit.The job cuts show that even airlines closer to faster-growing Asian markets aren't immune to the soaring jet fuel costs and fragile consumer confidence that have sparked a large round of downsizing at U.S. and European peers.Australia's flag carrier has now announced around 2,000 job cuts since August, when Chief Executive Alan Joyce unveiled a new Asian strategy centered on cancelling poorly-performing routes and establishing new carriers offshore to save costs."Our cost base in heavy maintenance is 30% higher than that of our competitors--we must close this gap to secure Qantas' future viability and success," Mr. Joyce said in a statement.In its annual report for the year to June 30, Qantas put total staff numbers at 36,000.
