AirAsia 1Q Net Profit Rises Marginally As Fuel Costs Continue To Hurt

KU), Southeast Asia's largest budget airline by fleet size, Wednesday said its fiscal first quarter net profit rose marginally as higher fuel costs offset gains in number of passengers carried.Net profit for the quarter ended March 31 rose to MYR172.4 million, from MYR171.9 million a year earlier, the low-cost carrier said in an exchange filing with Bursa Malaysia. Revenue rose 11% on year to MYR1.17 billion from MYR1.05 billion.During the quarter, AirAsia's fuel expenses rose 17% to MYR442.3 million from MYR376.5 million."Based on the current forward booking trend, underlying demand in the second quarter remains positive," Group Chief Executive Tony Fernandes said in a statement."We are monitoring fuel prices very closely and the moment we perceive an opportunity, we will not hesitate to add to our hedges based on our forward bookings," he added.AirAsia carried 4.82 million passengers in the first quarter of 2012, up from 4.32 million a year earlier, while its load f...
