Italy's Consob Head Seeks Temporary Ban On Banks Takeover-Report

MILAN -( Dow Jones )- The chairman of Italy's market watchdog Consob, Giuseppe Vegas, Wednesday asked the heads of the main domestic regulators and Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti to amend a securities law on takeovers in a move to safeguard domestic lenders, financial daily MF reported Thursday, without citing sources.

The ongoing financial and economic turmoil has been hammering banks' and insurers' stocks for the last six months, cutting the value of certain shares like UniCredit (UCG.MI) or Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI) by over 60%.
