AT&T Chief Sees Real Demand for Ultra High-Speed Internet

Growing demand for Internet bandwidth will push more telecommunications companies to offer ultra high-speed fiber-optic service to subscribers' doorsteps, AT&T Inc. (T) Chairman and Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said Wednesday, though service will focus on neighborhoods with many potential customers.Mr. Stephenson endorsed the service weeks after AT&T joined Google Inc. (GOOG) by saying it will offer one-gigabit fiber-optic Internet service to Austin, Texas, subscribers--as soon as it clears the necessary regulatory hurdles. AT&T and rival Verizon Communications Inc.
