AT&T 1st-period Net Up 5.2%, Revenue Up 1.8%

, the Dallas telecommunications-services major, reported that first-quarter net income rose 5.2% on 1.8% higher revenue. Profit for the quarter reached $3.58 billion, or 60 cents a share, from $3.41 billion, or 57 cents, in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue rose to $31.82 billion from $31.25 billion. A survey of analysts by FactSet Research produced consensus estimates of profit of 57 cents a share on $31.84 billion of revenue. "Smartphone and branded-computing-device sales continue to set a record pace, mobile-data revenues were up nearly 20%, and we achieved this growth with expanding margins," said Randall Stephenson, chairman and chief executive, in a Tuesday statement.
