ConAgra Expects Sales Volumes to Improve Significantly

ConAgra Foods Inc. (CAG) expects a significant improvement in the amount of food its sells in its current quarter and beyond as the company cycles last year's price increases and a big bump up in marketing spending on brands like Marie Callender's frozen meals and Pam cooking spray pays off.ConAgra on Wednesday reported a 3% decline in fiscal third-quarter sales volume excluding acquisition, despite a 33% increase in marketing spending. Overall sales in the business, which accounted for 60% of ConAgra's sales this quarter, were flat, as price increase offset the volume decline.The drop in sales volume was slightly better than the 4% decline in the previous quarter, but comes as some other large food companies like General Mills Inc.
