(XOM), the world's largest publicly traded oil company, raised its quarterly dividend by a higher-than-expected 21% Wednesday, showing its confidence that high oil prices are likely to continue.The 10-cent increase brings Exxon's quarterly dividend to 57 cents a share and will cost the oil-and-gas giant about $1.9 billion more a year. The dividend increase is steeper than the 15% spike some analysts had forecast and significantly above the 6.5% average increase in the last decade.The sharp dividend spike is expected to bring Exxon's dividend yield, currently at 2.64%, closer to rival Chevron Corp.'s (CVX) 3.4% and to narrow the gap with European competitors Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA) and BP PLC (BP), which offer yields above 4%.
