April Appliance Shipments Rise 9.2% From Year Ago

U.S. shipments of major home appliances from manufacturers grew 9.2% in April from a year earlier, as appliance demand continued to draw momentum from an improving housing sector and better consumer confidence.Shipments of washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and ranges and ovens rose to 2.8 million units in April from 2.6 million units in April 2012, according the figures released Wednesday by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, a Washington trade group. AHAM's so-called "Big Six" appliance categories expanded by 5.8% in March and 7.8% in February.Overall shipments of appliances, which include smaller items such as garbage disposals, dehumidifers and room air conditioners slipped 0.9% last month, after advancing 11% in March.
