Smith & Nephew Profit Up, Keeps Full-Year Guidance

K. medical device maker Smith & Nephew PLC (SN.LN) Thursday reported a 3% rise in first-quarter net profit and said that guidance for the full year, provided last quarter, is unchanged.Chief Executive Olivier Bohuon said: "We grew revenue, increased profit and improved our trading profit margin. We saw the first results of our actions to make Smith & Nephew more fit and effective."Net profit rose to $161 million from $156 million a year earlier. Revenue was flat at $1.08 billion, in line with expectations. Earnings per share, excluding some items, rose to 19.5 cents from 18.4 cents, ahead of analysts' average expectations.No dividends were paid during the first quarters of 2012 or 2011.U.S. rival Zimmer's (ZMH) first-quarter results last month showed continued weakness in the market for replacement hip and knees, hurt by the ongoing economic slowdown as patients, reluctant to take time off work, postponed procedures.Still, there are indications the declines could be moderating.U.S. r...
