Bayer Backs Xarelto Sales Forecast After FDA Panel Votes Against Expanded Use

German pharmaceutical company Bayer AG (BAYN.

XE) Thursday confirmed it sees peak annual sales of its Xarelto drug above EUR2 billion after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel voted against expanded use of the blood thinner. The FDA advisers narrowly voted against the use of the anti-clotting pill to treat patients with a heart problem known as acute coronary syndrome because of concerns about life-threatening bleeding.A spokesman for Bayer's HealthCare unit said the majority of sales are expected to come from the use of Xarelto in stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. The spokesman added the company will hold talks with the FDA and try to answer its questions.Warburg Research analyst Ulrich Huwald said the chances of a recommendation were low, so it wasn't surprising Bayer confirmed the Xarelto sales forecast.Xarelto is developed by Bayer and Johnson and Johnson (JNJ).Copyright © 2012 Dow Jones Newswires...
