U.S. Newspaper Circulation Eases Again

Average daily circulation at the U.S. largest newspapers declined in the six months ended March 31 from a year earlier, despite growth at the two largest papers, as the industry continues to battle a shift to digital media and weak advertising, according to the latest figures from the Alliance for Audited Media.Paid-digital subscriptions--which include smartphone apps, digital editions and website pages--continued to grab a larger portion of readers, accounting for 19.3% of U.S. daily circulation, up from 14.2% a year earlier.Average weekday circulation for 593 U.S. dailies eased 0.7%, based on a cumulative average for the period ended March 31 from a year earlier. Meanwhile, Sunday circulation for 519 Sunday papers slipped 1.4% in the latest period.The Wall Street Journal, owned by News Corp.
