Frontier Communications First-Quarter Profit Up 80% on Lower Expenses

Frontier Communications Corp.'s (FTR) first-quarter profit rose 80% as the regional telecommunications company posted lower expenses that offset weaker sales.Frontier roughly tripled its size in 2010 after buying nearly five million rural landlines from Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), driving sharp revenue growth for the following year. But in recent quarters, a decline in the number of the company's residential and business subscribers has pressured results.Chief Executive Maggie Wilderotter said the company in the latest period achieved the strongest rate of broadband net additions since its acquisition of the Verizon properties in 2010.
