Anglo American Iron Ore, Copper Output Up; Diamonds Drop

Globally diversified miner Anglo American PLC (AAL.

LN) Thursday said first-quarter iron ore, copper, nickel and platinum output rose on the year, but diamond output fell, after the company completed three strategic mining projects.The FTSE-100 miner's output shows its key growth projects are beginning to deliver value and strengthen the company's long-term prospects, as it nears completion on a multibillion-dollar deal to take majority control of diamond producer De Beers."All three strategic growth projects delivered in 2011 are ramping up well, achieving between 74% and 86% of nameplate capacity during the quarter," Anglo American said in a statement.Iron ore output rose 17% on the year to 11.7 million metric tons, mainly due the start-up of the 9-million-tons-a-year South African Kolomela mine last year and higher output from Brazil.Copper production rose 21% on the year to 168,400 tons in the first quarter, in line with the fourth quarter, following the completion and continued ram...
