U.S. Appeals Court Reverses $593 Million Award Against J&J

A federal appeals court Thursday overturned a $593 million patent-infringement award against Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ) Cordis subsidiary, ruling the company didn't infringe a doctor's patent on heart-stent technology. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said a Texas federal trial judge misconstrued the claimed inventions in a patent held by Dr. Bruce N. The judge then added in another $111 million in interest. The doctor had sued several stent makers and obtained a $501 million award in 2008 against Boston Scientific Corp. (BSX). After Boston Scientific appealed the jury verdict in its case, the two sides settled before the appeals court issued a ruling, with the company agreeing to pay about $5...
