3M 1Q Profit Up 4.1% On Industrial Strength; 2012 Outlook Improved

's (MMM) first-quarter earnings climbed 4.1% as sales in the diversified company's industrial and transportation business more than offset weaker results from units tied to consumer electronics.The company also lifted the lower end of its adjusted full-year earnings estimate by 10 cents, calling for a 2012 profit between $6.35 and $6.50.Shares were up 2.7% at $89.50 premarket on the stronger-than-expected results and boosted guidance. The stock had climbed 6.6% this year through Monday's close.The industrial conglomerate, which makes a huge array of products ranging from Post-it notes to furnace filters, has reported mostly stronger earnings over the past year due to steady sales growth and higher selling prices in some segments.In January, however, then-Chief Executive George W.
