Taiwan PC Makers 1Q Results Mixed; Asustek Most Profitable

Taiwanese personal computer makers had mixed fortunes in the first quarter of 2012, with Asustek Computer Inc.

(2357.TW) Monday reporting a better-than-expected 46% jump in net profit, while contract PC maker Compal Electronics Inc. (2324.TW) said quarterly earnings slid 46%, as sluggish sales at major client, Acer Inc., weighed on its bottom line.For Asustek, its strategy of investing heavily in research, product development and marketing and the outsourcing of production to other contract makers in order to keep costs down appears to have paid off, as it gained market share at the expenses of others including Acer Inc.
