Japan Stocks Rise On Europe Hopes, With Banks Up

Japanese stocks recovered from a weak open in early Thursday trading, as a summit of European Union leaders yielded fresh commitments to keep Greece in the euro zone.

The Nikkei Stock Average traded 0.4% higher at 8,594.42 after opening lower, with the Topix also adding 0.4%. Financials were among the gainers, recovering from the previous session's drop as news from the European summit trickled out. Mizuho Financial Group Inc. gained 0.9%, Shinsei Bank Ltd. rose 2.3%, Bank of Yokohama Ltd. climbed 2%, and Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. firmed by 1%. Property shares also saw some gains, as the Nikkei newspaper cited a CBRE survey showing commercial real estate was improving. Mitsui Fudosan Co. advanced 1.5%, while Mitsubishi Estate Co. rose 2%. Some major blue-chip exporters weighed on the market, however, as the yen jumped against the euro, which dropped below the key Û100 level.
