Tata Motors, Fiat Revamp India Alliance For Car Sales

(TTM) will stop selling and servicing Fiat SpA's (FIATY) cars in India after the two companies agreed Wednesday to revamp a more than six-year-old alliance as the Italian auto maker seeks to turnaround falling car sales in this growing market for automobiles.This ends months of speculation over the fate of the joint venture that saw executives from both auto makers expressing their frustration over lackluster sales of Fiat cars in India.Fiat sold just 16,073 cars in the financial year ended March 31, 2012, a decline of 24%. That compares with 4.7% growth in sales of passenger vehicles in India at 2.62 million autos.The two companies will, however, continue with their equally owned joint venture, Fiat India Automobiles Ltd., to manufacture Fiat and Tata brands of cars as well as their engines and transmissions at a factory at Rajangaon in western India, they said in a joint statement.Tata Motors, India's biggest auto maker by sales, is currently managing the distributio...
