Hyundai Goes Against The Trend, Expanding Output In Europe

(005380.SE) Thursday said it will invest 475 million euros ($604 million) to expand production at a plant in Turkey, highlighting the success the South Korean auto maker has had in Europe, where its peers have been struggling with overcapacity in a market downturn.Hyundai, which has had success with its competitively priced models, will double annual production capacity at its Hyundai Assan Otomotive Sanayi plant to 200,000 units and add 750 jobs to a staff of 1,500 by the end of 2013.It will use the extra capacity to increase production of a new version of the small i20 car that it already makes at the plant, as well as add a second line for the i10.The plant began making the new version of the i20 on May 1 and aims to build as many as 120,000 units a year.It will begin building the i10, another small car, at the end of 2013.Both will be sold in Europe.Hyundai has one other plant in Europe, located in the Czech Republic with a capacity of 300,000 units a year.
