CME Group Launching Black Sea Wheat Futures Contract In June

CME Group Inc.

(CME) plans to bring the first local futures contract to the Black Sea region, launching wheat futures in the hopes of capturing an increasingly important, but unreliable, market.The exchange, which dominates grains trading in the U.S., said Wednesday it plans to launch the contract in June, with delivery points at Black Sea ports in Russia, Ukraine and Romania. This breadbasket has accounted for roughly 20% of the world's wheat exports in recent years, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that will climb to 30% in the next decade.But the region has suffered from a lack of physical infrastructure and government export bans, which could make the large grains traders who are crucial to the contract's success wary of using it, traders said."It's a very, very unstable environment," said Tregg Cronin, an analyst with Country Hedging, a brokerage and subsidiary of farmer cooperative CHS Inc.
