These gains don't cause pain. A capital gain is the amount of money you pocket by selling one of your investments for more than you paid for it. Technically, capital gains only count for what's called a capital asset, but that's really just anything you own for investment purposes. Stocks and bonds obviously qualify, but your house and household furnishings can also count.
For tax purposes, capital gains are classified as either long-term (held for more than one year) or short-term (held for less than one year) and there are different tax implications for how long you hold onto a capital asset. For most long-term capital gains, you're taxed no more than 15% of the value of the asset. Short-term gains get taxed as regular income, so you pay the rate for the tax bracket you're in.
Capital gains can also be realized or unrealized. When you physically sell an asset like a stock, you've realized the capital gain. When you're holding the stock, and it has a value over its purchase price, but you're not selling it, you've got an unrealized gain, and you won't realize it until you sell.
In a perfect world, we'd all have capital gains. But no one¿s that smart or lucky. When the value of an asset at sale is below what you've paid for it, it's called a capital loss. The good news is that the government lets you count that loss against any gains you've had, lowering the taxes you pay. In fact, many people who sell a stock that has risen far over their purchase price tend to sell some stinkers, too, at the same time for the tax benefit. This is known as a capital-loss offset.

X Factor's Niki Evans Amazing Cosmetic Surgery Success!
Comtex
LEEDS, England, August 15, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ----X Factor star and mother of two Niki Evans has had amazing results from having liposuction with MYA Cosmetic Surgery. (http://www.mya.co.uk) The 36-year-old, who is well known for her vocal talent, is thrilled with the results of her surgery with MYA and in total has lost 6 inches from her waist, 4 inches from her hips and 4 inches from each thigh. Her decision to have the procedure was made at the end of last year as she was not happy with her current shape and wanted to start her music career with a brand new look.
"My weight has always fluctuated and no matter how much weight I lost through diet and exercise I have always had certain stubborn areas of fat that I just could never seem to shift. During the X Factor I lost just under two stone but my body was still quite a boxy shape. Having liposuction has completely changed my shape giving me curves in all the right places! Clothes look so much better on me now and I feel a lot more feminine and in proportion. I am so please with the results!" says Niki.
Throughout her experience with MYA Niki has learned that Liposuction (http://www.mya.co.uk/cosmetic-surgery/liposuction.php) is not a quick fix for weight loss and never guarantees the loss of inches and ounces. "MYA ensured I understood that having liposuction is not a weight loss solution but is more about re shaping the body making it more streamlined."
Niki had liposuction to several areas including her inner and outer thighs, abdomen and back. In total the procedure took just under four hours to perform and Niki had a couple of weeks out of her busy promotional schedule to rest and recuperate. The procedure was carried out under a general anaesthetic and she had a one-night stay in hospital.
"I did experience some bruising and swelling which is typical of the liposuction procedure and I really started to notice significant results after a few weeks once the swelling began to go down. A couple of months on I can't believe the change it has made. I never thought I would ever fit in to a pair of skinny jeans and now I do and they are a size 10-12!" Speaking about the recent changes that have been made for the new series of X Factor Niki says that Sharon will be greatly missed. "She was the most popular judge and was really good to me and my family."
Liposuction is one MYA's most popular procedures and results from MYA's recent survey show that cosmetic surgery on the whole is becoming increasingly popular. Out of the 500 people interviewed 72% of people would consider having cosmetic surgery and 82% of people have friends or relatives that have had cosmetic surgery.
