By Kate Gibson
MarketWatch Pulse
NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks on Tuesday offered a mixed finish, with industrials and material shares up and consumer staples lower. Word that Warren Buffett planned to buy one of the nation's railways boosted transportation issues, but failed to inspire broad moves higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 17.53 points, or 0.2%, to 9,771.91. The S&P 500 added 2.53 points, or 0.2%, to 1,045.41, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 8.12 points, or 0.4%, to 2,057.32.
