Rio Rancho Schools Cut Substitute Teachers

RIO RANCHO, N.M.--The Rio Rancho School District is cutting almost all substitute teachers in an effort to save money as the district fights a $4.5 million budget deficit.

The move means even Superintendent Sue Cleveland will be a sub.

Instead of hiring substitutes, people who already work for the district will be put in the classroom when a teacher calls in sick.

But some people will be pulled from critical jobs to do that. It's a situation the district acknowledges is less than ideal.

A memo from district leaders shows that dozens of employees, including educational assistants, librarians and councilors, will have to serve as substitute teachers.

District leaders say everyone who will substitute has teaching certificates and many have classroom experience.
