Thousands of New Citizens Take Oath at Fenway Park
Associated Press
Amid a sea of fluttering American flags, more than 3,000 people have taken the oath to become U.S. citizens at Fenway Park.
The naturalization ceremony Wednesday was the first ever at the home of the Boston Red Sox, who were in Florida to play the Tampa Bay Rays.
The new citizens and their families sat in the stands, while a judge sworn them in from near the field. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, flanked by the Red Sox's two World Championship trophies, welcomed the immigrants to their new country.
They hail from nearly 140 countries. The most -- 290 -- come from the Dominican Republic, followed closely by China, Haiti, Vietnam and Brazil.
Some of the new citizens also are military veterans who recently returned from Iraq.
