Just as your pulse is checked during a routine physical, free cash flow is used as an indicator of a company's health. It equals the cash brought in from operations minus the money needed to pay the bills. Think about leftover money in your checking account after you pay this month's bills.
Investors and analysts see this leftover money as a gauge of a company's ability to perform. It is available for transactions such as handing out dividends and working on new products.
Some argue free cash flow is wrongly overshadowed by the emphasis often placed on earnings. Earnings numbers can be manipulated and don't always tell the whole story -- and earnings don't mean much if there's nothing left over after a company pays its expenses. Even if you bring in a six-figure salary, but no money left after paying the bills, are you in great financial shape?
You don't have to be Einstein to figure out free cash flow. To calculate the number, subtract the company's expenditures and dividends from its operating cash flow.
If the free cash flow is written in red ink, it doesn't necessarily signal curtains. This is common for young companies looking to grow. It also could be a result of heavy investments, which in the long run could be worth a standing ovation.

New Subscription-free Audio Books for iPods Launched by BooksOnBoard
Comtex
AUSTIN, Texas, July 7, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ----Downloading audio books by John Grisham, James Patterson and others to audio devices - like iPods - just became a little easier and cheaper. BooksOnBoard, the premier online bookshop, is the first independent online bookseller to offer both subscription-free and DRM-free MP3 audio books from major publishers. And BooksOnBoard is offering a 30% discount off list on many of these new MP3 titles found at https://www.booksonboard.com/index.php?F=drm-free_audio_book_freeform.
According to BooksOnBoard CEO Bob LiVolsi, "We charge no fees or monthly dues. Audio Book listeners no longer have to make a long-term subscription commitment to get audio books at good prices for their iPods and other devices. New MP3 audio books work in most devices through the free media console. For example, you need only connect your iPod to your PC, click synchronize; the audio automatically downloads to the device."
Transferring MP3 Audio Books to listening devices is simple. Since they are DRM-free - a type of encryption used for audio books - files require no additional conversion after download.
LiVolsi adds, "The digital world is awash in competing formats. This confusion is not in the interest of our customers. The arrival - at last - of standard DRM-free MP3 audio books makes life much easier for audio book fans."
Best-selling author and historian Alison Weir, whose audio book The Lady Elizabeth is now available in MP3 format, said, "This amazing technology will make books even more widely available, and extend choice, to those who are blind or partially sighted, and who rely on audio books for their enjoyment. I heartily applaud the contribution that BooksOnBoard is making to facilitate access to literature."
Other best-selling authors with select MP3 titles available include Stephen King, Anne Rice, David Baldacci, Mary Balogh, Sandra Brown, Amanda Quick, Julie Garwood, Suzanne Brockman, Lee Child, and Tom Clancy. OverDrive - the leading digital media services company for libraries, schools, publishers, and retailers - distributes these DRM-free MP3 titles.
BooksOnBoard also continues to offer DRM WMA titles to provide customers with a broad selection.
