Microsoft just won’t quit. The tech giant is once again making a move to acquire Yahoo’s Internet search business, according to people familiar with the matter as cited in the Wall Street Journal.
Microsoft (MSFT) has continued to hold talks with Time Warner (TWX) and News Corp. (NWS), in hopes of coming to a deal that could lead to Yahoo’s break up, according to the report. Previously, Microsoft had explored a deal under which it would acquire Yahoo’s (YHOO) search engine along with a News Corp or Time Warner holding, like MySpace or AOL.
Microsoft’s Chief Executive Steve Ballmer scheduled a meeting for Monday to speak to Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock about other partners, according to the Journal. However, this meeting was canceled by Microsoft, which led Yahoo and others to believe that Microsoft was unable to come to a deal with either News Corp or Time Warner.
Microsoft famously withdrew its bid for Yahoo in January, and recently ruled out purchasing the whole of Yahoo in favor of buying its search business alone.
It seems everyone is shaking their heads over the failed discussions and cancelled plans that have drug on for over half a year. Sources close to the matter say a deal seems unlikely at this point, according to the Journal.
News Corp. is the parent company of the FOX Business Network
