Toyota Recalls 3.8M Vehicles on Pedal Hazard

Toyota Motor (TM) announced plans Wednesday to reconfigure accelerator pedals in 3.8 million vehicles that were recalled in September due to the threat of the pedals being trapped by the floor mat.
The Japanese auto giant said the shape of the accelerator pedal will be reconfigured to address the issue. Toyota also said vehicles with any Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mat will be provided with newly-designed floor mats.
At the same time, Toyota said it will install a brake override system onto the involved models as an “extra measure of confidence.” The system will cut off engine power in case of simultaneous application of both the gas and brake pedals.
“The safety of our owners and the public is our utmost concern and Toyota has and will continue to thoroughly investigate and take appropriate measures to address any defect trends that are identified,” the company said in a statement.
The models involved in this previously-disclosed recall are: 2007 to 2010 Camry, 2005 to 2010 Avalon, 2004 to 2009 Prius, 2005 to 2010 Tacoma, 2007 to 2010 Tundra, 2007 to 2010 Lexus ES350, 2006 to 2010 IS250 and 2006 to 2010 IS 350.
Toyota said it will implement the remedies during 2010 and start notifying owners of the involved vehicles via first-class mail by the end of this year.
Ahead of the pedal replacement, Toyota advised owners of the involved vehicles to take out any removable driver’s floor mat and not replace it with any other mat until they are notified of the vehicle-based remedy.
Toyota’s stock was inactive in the premarkets Wednesday.
