N.C. Truckers Seek Union

NEW BERN, N.C.--Independent truckers who deliver logs and haul away paper from two eastern North Carolina pulp mills are campaigning for better pay and benefits.
The drivers have formed the United Truckers Cooperative and say they'll stop driving and picket the big mills in Plymouth and Vanceboro. Organizers plan to hold a news conference Saturday in New Bern to publicize their efforts.
A New Jersey trucker and organizer for the unionizing effort by the Industrial Workers of the World said mill owners Weyerhaeuser and Domtar haven't recognized the union. Billy Randel said the effort involves several hundred truck drivers.
The press conference will be at 3 p.m. at the United Steelworkers union hall in New Bern, at 1711 Race Track Road.
