Treasury Crook Agrees to Pay Up
Associated Press
A former lawyer convicted of helping steal $9.4 million from the state Treasury has agreed that he is in violation of the terms of his probation and not finished paying restitution.
Richard Arrighi agreed in Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday to repay more than $425,000 by Nov. 5 or face additional prison time.
Arrighi's lawyer told the court that his client could not pay restitution because he had zero net worth.
But prosecutors responded that Arrighi and his wife live in a Florida home worth $1.5 million and own a number of late-model luxury vehicles.
Arrighi served two years of a three-year sentence he received in 2001 for his role in a scheme to steal money from a Treasury account that holds the unused checks of companies that do business with the state.
