Market Winners & Losers: Office Depot, Monsanto

    The major indices closed the session in positive territory for the fifth day in a row, with the Dow closing at 2009 highs. The Dow closed up 0.8%, the S&P gained 1.0% and the Nasdaq added 1.2%.

    Here are Thursday’s winners and losers:

    Winners

    Office Depot Inc. (ODP)
    Despite facing a more than $200 million lawsuit from a vendor, the office supplies retailer saw its shares soar 11.4%. ODP shares last traded at $6.06, up 62 cents on the day.

    Eastman Kodak Co. (EK)
    The camera and film manufacturer gained big as the stock closed up 11.1%. Kodak shares ended the session at $6.11, a gain of 61 cents on the day.

    Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. (HIG)
    Positive words from the company’s CEO helped the investment firm rise 8.7%. HIG shares closed at $25.00 up $1.99 on the day.

    CBS Corp. (CBS)
    The media giant gained 8.4% after Goldman upgraded the sector. CBS finished trading at $11.95, a gain of 93 cents on the day.

    Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (PXD)
    The oil exploration company traded up 8.2% Thursday. PXD shares closed at $32.88 up $2.48 on the day.

    Losers

    Monsanto Co. (MON)
    A drop in the company’s full-year outlook pushed the world’s largest seed producer down 5%. MON shares last traded at $79.30, a loss of $4.18 on the day.

    Snap-On Inc. (SNA)
    The tool manufacturer bucked market trends as the stock fell 3.3%. SNA shares closed at $36.26, down $1.25 on the day.

    Ameren Corp. (AEE)
    After announcing a common stock offering late Wednesday, the utility fell 2.9% on Thursday at session’s end. AEE shares closed at $25.35, down 75 cents on the day.

    American International Group (AIG)
    News that the insurer may be shedding business to pay back government loans drove the stock down 2.7%. AIG shares finished Thursday at $37.85, a loss of $1.04.

    Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS)
    Shares of Electronic Arts dropped 2.6% after a downgrade by Goldman. ERTS shares last traded at $18.05, down 48 cents on the day.
