Market Winners & Losers: Constellation Brands, MBIA

    The fourth quarter got out to a dreary start as the major indexes all closed in negative territory ahead of Friday’s jobs report. The Dow closed down 2.1%, the Nasdaq dropped 3.1% and the S&P fell 2.6%.

    Here are Thursday’s winners and losers:

    Winners

    Constellation Brands Inc. (STZ)
    The company’s quarterly earnings gave shares a 5.4% boost Thursday. Constellation Brands’ stock last traded at $15.97, a gain of 82 cents on the day.

    Time Warner Inc. (TWX)
    News that Comcast and NBC Universal may be merging pushed the media giant up 4.3% Thursday. TWX shares ended Thursday at $30.03, up $1.25 on the day.

    Hershey Co. (HSY)
    The company’s unlikely bid for Cadbury helped the chocolate manufacturer gain 2.5% Thursday. Hershey shares closed at $39.84, a gain of 98 cents on the day.

    Big Lots Inc. (BIG)
    An upgrade by J.P. Morgan sent shares of Big Lots up 2.1% Thursday. BIG shares finished the session at $25.55, up 53 cents on the day.

    Dean Foods Co. (DF)
    The dairy products retailer and manufacturer added 2% Thursday. DF shares closed the first session of the month at $18.15, a gain of 36 cents on the day.

    Losers

    MBIA Inc. (MBI)
    The insurer continued its downward slide, falling 10.6% after S&P cut the shares to junk status. MBI shares last traded at $6.94, a loss of 82 cents on the day.

    MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS)
    A downgrade by JP Morgan dropped the wireless communications provider 9.3%. PCS shares ended the session at $8.49, down 87 cents on the day.

    Eastman Kodak Co. (EK)
    The camera and film manufacturer lost another 9.2% Thursday. Kodak shares closed at $4.34, a loss of 44 cents on the day.

    Zions Bancorp (ZION)
    The regional bank saw its shares dive 8.9%, or $1.59, to close at $16.38 Thursday.

    E*TRADE Financial Corp. (ETFC)
    The online investor service followed sector trends, dropping shares by 8.6%. ETFC shares last traded at $7.51, a loss of 69 cents on the day.
