Market Winners & Losers: AIG, McGraw Hill

    A late session rally pushed the major indices into positive territory Thursday for the first time this month. The Dow closed up 0.7%, the S&P gained 0.9% and the Nasdaq added 0.8% to close the day.

    Here are Thursday’s winners and losers:

    Winners

    American International Group (AIG)
    The insurance giant saw its shares jump 10% Thursday, with shares gaining $3.80 on the day to settle at $41.75.

    Nordstrom Inc. (JWN)
    Despite August sales declining more than 7%, the stock rebounded from recent losses to close 8.8% higher Thursday. JWN shares ended the session at $29.58, a gain on $2.39 on the day.

    Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST)
    The bulk retailer reported a decline in same-store sales of 2% which beat analysts' expectations. The stock rose 8.6%, or $4.34, to last trade at $54.99.

    The Gap Inc. (GPS)
    Another same-store sales beat bumped the retailer up 7.6%. GPS shares finished Thursday at $21.18, a gain of $1.49 on the day.

    Ford Motor Company (F)
    A Moody’s upgrade stopped the recent slide in the automaker's stock, which added 6.4% Thursday. Ford shares closed at $7.48, up 45 cents on the day.

    Losers

    The McGraw-Hill Companies Inc. (MHP)
    The company's stock fell 10.2% after a federal judge allowed a lawsuit against the company to progress. MHP shares last traded $29.01, down $3.30 on the day.

    Family Dollar Stories Inc. (FDO)
    The discount retailer's earnings failed to meet the Street’s expectations and the stock fell 8.6%. FDO shares closed at $28.32, down $2.67 on the day.

    Moody’s Corporation (MCO)
    Another company targeted in the lawsuit against McGraw-Hill, Moody's saw its shares fall 7.1%, or $1.84, to end the day at $24.26 on Thursday.

    Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF)
    The retailer's dismal same-store sales helped send the stock down 3.5% on Thursday. ANF shares last traded at $30.98, down $1.11 on the day.

    Sara Lee Corp. (SLE)
    The global-food manufacturer dropped 1.9% on Thursday. SLE shares finished the session at $9.36, a loss of 18 cents on the day.
