Ponzi scheme mastermind Bernard Madoff will not appeal his 150-year sentence handed down last week for perpetrating probably the largest investment fraud in history.

Defense attorney Ira L. Sorkin confirmed the decision Thursday but declined to elaborate.

The 71-year-old Madoff was sentenced last week after admitting he bilked thousands of investors out of billions of dollars.

Meanwhile, a report by the trustee responsible for recovering funds for former Madoff clients put the recovery price tag so far at nearly $46 million. These fees are being paid by the Securities Investor Protection Corp., the securities industry funded entity formed to assist defrauded investors.

More than $1 billion has been recovered so far, and $13.7 billion more is being sought, according to the trustee, Irving Picard.

The report said the search “has unearthed a labyrinth of interrelated international funds, institutions and entities of almost unparalleled complexity and breadth.”

In addition, the report said the trustee has located assets and businesses “of interest” in 11 places: Great Britain, Ireland, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain, Gibraltar, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas. It also said he has sent more than 230 subpoenas seeking overseas records.

More than 15,400 claims against Madoff were filed by a July 2 deadline, the trustee said. He noted there were multiple claims from several accounts.
