Judge Freezes Madoff's Brother's Assets

Peter Madoff, the brother of jailed Ponzi-scheme mastermind Bernard Madoff, had his assets frozen Wednesday by a state judge on Long Island in New York.
The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit filed by a Brooklyn Law School student who claims he lost almost $500,000 in Bernard Madoff's investment fraud, FOX Business has confirmed through a court official.
Andrew Samuels, 22, charged in his suit that Peter Madoff served for five years from 2003 to 2008 as sole trustee of Samuels’ trust fund.
Like other civil complaints filed after the collapse of Bernard Madoff’s scheme in December, Samuels claims he was unaware that his money was being invested with Madoff.
Peter Madoff, according to the suit, “falsely claimed . . . that he was actively managing and administering” the trust. Meanwhile, he “had full knowledge that it was a fraudulent Ponzi-scheme and nothing more than an unprecedented fraud,” the complaint states.
Peter Madoff served as senior managing director and chief compliance officer of his brother’s broker-dealer firm.
Supreme Court Justice Stephen A. Bucaria of Nassau County on Wednesday blocked Peter Madoff from removing “any funds” from any of his accounts or doing anything to dissipate his assets.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for April 3.
The order also requires Peter Madoff to “disclose the location of all assets he has secreted to date” and account for whether any assets he may have disposed of.
Through his lawyers, Peter Madoff has denied he knew of his brother’s scheme, and Bernard Madoff has sought to distance his family from his criminal activities.
Bernard Madoff was jailed on March 12 following his admission in court that he ran a vast fraud that likely bilked investors of many billions of dollars. He pleaded guilty to 11 felonies and could face a sentence of up to 150 years in prison when he is sentenced in June.
