Unite: GBP10 Million Stands Between BA, Union Agreeing Deal

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Unite, the union representing British Airways PLC (BAY.LN) cabin crew, Thursday said GBP10 million stands between the airline and itself striking a deal and averting a strike.
A spokeswoman for Unite said the GBP10 million saving could be achieved through allowing more people to shift to part-time work, but said BA was contesting the validity of the amount.
In return, Unite has eased demands to reverse changes BA imposed Nov. 16 when the airline said it was reducing cabin crew on long-haul flights from London's Heathrow Airport to 14 personnel from 15. Unite now wants to reinstate cabin crew on some of the flights on International and European fleet, instead of reversing changes across the board.
A British Airways spokesman would only say the carrier remains available for talks.
The two sides have been talking for over a year but talks broke down late Wednesday. Unite has until March 15 to notify BA of dates if it plans to take industrial action.
