Toyota Reportedly To Build China R&D Center
By John Letzing
MarketWatch Pulse
SAN FRANCISCO -- Toyota Motor Corp. plans to build a research-and-development center in China as early as next year in order to better tailor cars to local needs, according to a report Thursday. Japan's Nikkei business daily reported that the new R&D facility would be on the outskirts of Shanghai and may include a full-scale test course. It would cost roughly 30 billion to 40 billion yen ($331 million to $442 million), the report said, and would be part of a larger effort by Toyota to customize its cars for different regions.
