Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) will recall 110,000 Toyota Tundra trucks to remove the spare tires that are mounted underneath the vehicle, according to a release from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA] on Tuesday.

The recall applies to 2000 to 2003 models of the Toyota Tundra that are registered in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as Washington, D.C.

According to the NHTSA, road salt used in the previously referenced states to de-ice roadways in the winter months can cause a piece of the vehicle’s frame to erode, causing the spare tire to fall off and cause a hazard for other vehicles on the road.

The administration said in its release that Toyota will contact owners of affected vehicles and request they bring them into a dealer, to receive a “corrosion-resistant compound to the affected area or replace the rear cross-member if necessary.”

Drivers are also advised to remove the spare tire prior to bringing the vehicle into the dealer.

Shares of Toyota fell $1.43 or 1.85% to close Monday’s session at $76.05, before rising a penny in after-hours trading.
