Japanese Shares Drop As Exporters Weaken

TOKYO -- Japanese shares headed sharply lower in early trading Monday in Tokyo in the wake of Wall Street's Friday's tumble, with exporters among the loss leaders as the yen strengthened against the U.S. dollar. Japan's Nikkei 225 Average fell 2.9% to 9,743.02, and the Topix shed 2.1% to 875.49, with Nissan Motor Co. falling 3.7%, Nikon Corp. down 3.8%, and Sony Corp. dropping 4.7%. In South Korea, the Kospi fell 2.3% with Ssangyong Motor Co. among the bigger losers, down 5%.
