Dealer 'Clunkers' Deadline Extended Again

The Department of Transportation again extended the deadline for dealers to submit claims for “Cash for Clunkers” rebates, admitting that there were still problems with accessing the Web site.

“The CARS Web site has been fully operational overnight and will remain open for dealers to submit sales documentation until 8:00 p.m. EDT this evening. After that time, the system will be closed to new submissions,” a Department of Transportation spokesman said.

The spokesman continued, “Due to high user demand, dealers may experience some delay in accessing the system at peak times.  If this occurs, dealers are requested to try again in 30 minutes.”

The deadline to make the deals themselves passed on Monday night, though, and DOT said that dealers and customers shouldn't try to make any more Clunkers deals.

Cash for Clunkers, or the Car Allowance Rebate System, offered rebates of up to $4,500 for people who turned in some gas guzzlers and got more fuel-efficient vehicles. It was so successful that the initial $1 billion allocation turned out not to be enough, and Congress and the President had to hurriedly pass an additional $2 billion to keep it going.

The program helped boost July sales numbers at such car makers as Toyota (TM), Ford (F), Honda (HMC) and General Motors. But some think the boost could be temporary, as the recession is still eating away at jobs, and tight credit conditions have forced Americans to rein in their spending generally.
