British Airways Slashes 1,700 Positions

British Airways (BAY) on Tuesday announced it was laying off the equivalent of 1,700 staff members in the United Kingdom, and imposing a pay freeze that could last two years for its cabin crew.

The airline said it will fly planes with one fewer crew member, but remain within minimum safety limits.

British Airways said 1,000 members of the cabin crew had volunteered to be laid off, while 3,000 will be voluntarily opting for part-time work. Given that the 3,000 employees will now be on a part-time schedule, it is the equivalent of a loss of 1,700 jobs.
