Australian Shares Gain Early, Ahead Of RBA Meet

    LOS ANGELES -- Australian shares chalked up gains in the opening minutes of trading Tuesday, following an advance on Wall Street and ahead of a likely interest-rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia later in the day. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.8% to 4,576, with airline shares among the early gainers. Stock in Qantas Airways Ltd. rose 0.8%, while that of rival Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd. gained 3% after news suggesting its joint venture with Delta Air Lines Inc. will be approved by Australian regulators. Miner Rio Tinto Ltd. also advanced, up 1%.
