Airlines Rise; International Demand Edges Up

NEW YORK - Airline stocks were up early Thursday after a trade group said international passenger traffic grew for the first time in a year. At last check, the NYSE Arca Airline Index rose 2% to 24.42 points with all but one of its 13 components trading up. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added about 69 points to 9,832. Shares of Delta jumped more than 4% to $7.51, United parent UAL Corp. rose 4% to $6.59 and US Airways added 3.2% to $3.25. Trading flat were U.S.-listed shares of Tam Sa at $14.25 each. Earlier, the International Air Transport Association said September passenger traffic rose 0.3%, mostly due to a favorable prior-year comparison when traffic sank nearly 3%.
