Verizon Launches 2 Google Android Phones This Year
FOXBusiness
In a move that could challenge Apple’s stronghold on the smartphone market, Verizon Wireless (VZ) announced plans on Tuesday to sell two cellular phones equipped with Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system later this year.
Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said the union with Google could feasibly produce several unique Internet and phone devices moving forward.
The Android phones will run the Google Voice application, which is being hailed as the next major advancement in phone calling technology. Google Voice will allow consumers to make free domestic calls and low-cost international calls, but Apple has not yet approved the application for the iPhone for fear that the Federal Communications Commission may question the legality of the service.
There are currently an estimated 10,000 applications that run on Android phones, according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Apple recently announced its applications for the iPhone and iTouch have surpassed 85,000.
