If the only place you watch live video broadcasting is in your living room, you’re behind on the times. Westpoint's Brad Hunstable and John Ham initially developed Ustream.tv, a live video-broadcasting Web site, to enable military personnel serving overseas could watch, interact with, and create their own video content, but now the site is accessible to the public.

“We wanted to empower a new way of communicating online,” Ham told Fox Business anchor Liz Claman. “Having served in the military, we were always busy and were placed in a situation where we had to make tradeoffs between our families and friends. We have 10 minutes, do we call mom, do we call dad, do we call my sister in L.A.?”

Ham said he and Hunstable wanted a “one-to-many interactive model” that would allow soldiers to easily connect with everyone at the same time, so they tried to keep the process simple.

“You only need an Internet connection, a video camera and with a few moments with our software. The Web site is able to broadcast out to 10 people, or that could potentially be 10,000 people,” Hunstable said.

Now that the site is available to the public, the company is growing exponentially.

“We are doing about 11 million uniques [unique page views] a month after only a year of launch; we do about 15,000 broadcasts a day,” Hunstable said.

All of that growth has investors interested. Hunstable and Ham raised $11.1 million in their first round of venture capital fund raising. Hunstable admitted that they have been approached by other companies interested in a buyout, at this point, they’re still focused on growing their business.

In the future, Ustream would like to get into the mobile industry, and the company is positioning itself to take advantage of the growing popularity of mobile devices.

“You can imagine a time when people are broadcasting from their mobile phones, and they’re going to broadcast that to Ustream.tv,” Ham said.
