Twitter Users More Numerous Than Thought: Study
By John Letzing
MarketWatch Pulse
SAN FRANCISCO -- Research firm eMarketer Inc. revised its estimate for the number of people who will use online microblogging service Twitter this year at least once per month on Monday, increasing its forecast to 18 million from 12.1 million. The upward revision was the result of "huge gains" seen by closely-held Twitter in the first quarter, eMarketer said in a statement. The outlook was tempered, however, by indications that "large numbers of users are abandoning Twitter after a short period of experimentation," eMarketer said. By 2010, eMarketer expects that 15.5% of all U.S. adult Internet users will use Twitter.
