Oracle Plans To Oppose E.U. Stance On Sun Merger

SAN FRANCISCO -- Oracle late Monday said it will "vigorously" oppose the European Commission's Statement of Objections regarding its pending merger with Sun Microsystems , noting that there is no credible evidence of competitive harm. "There is no basis in European law for objecting to a merger of two among eight firms selling differentiated products. Mergers like this occur regularly and have not been prohibited by United States or European regulators in decades," said Oracle in a statement. It also said the merger with Sun is essential for competition in the high-end server market. The statement follow reports that the European Commission has postponed a decision on the deal until late November, delaying the final closing of the merger.
