Intel Corp. (INTC) announced Friday that it named Douglas Melamed senior vice president and general counsel for the company.

The chip-maker said Melamed will be charged with overseeing Intel’s corporate and government affairs, as well as legal matters.

In his most recent position, Melamed, who is 63, was a partner at WilmerHale law firm where he headed up the Regulatory and Government Affairs Department.

"We're extremely pleased to have Doug join the Intel team," said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini, in a statement. "His breadth of experience and legal expertise combined with his background in government are an outstanding fit for us."

Shares of Intel rose 14 cents or 0.71% in Friday’s trading session to close at $19.82 a share. The stock was up another four cents in after-hours trading.
