Just as your pulse is checked during a routine physical, free cash flow is used as an indicator of a company's health. It equals the cash brought in from operations minus the money needed to pay the bills. Think about leftover money in your checking account after you pay this month's bills.
Investors and analysts see this leftover money as a gauge of a company's ability to perform. It is available for transactions such as handing out dividends and working on new products.
Some argue free cash flow is wrongly overshadowed by the emphasis often placed on earnings. Earnings numbers can be manipulated and don't always tell the whole story -- and earnings don't mean much if there's nothing left over after a company pays its expenses. Even if you bring in a six-figure salary, but no money left after paying the bills, are you in great financial shape?
You don't have to be Einstein to figure out free cash flow. To calculate the number, subtract the company's expenditures and dividends from its operating cash flow.
If the free cash flow is written in red ink, it doesn't necessarily signal curtains. This is common for young companies looking to grow. It also could be a result of heavy investments, which in the long run could be worth a standing ovation.

Insyde Software Releases UEFI Firmware for New Intel(R) System-On-A-Chip
Comtex
WESTBOROUGH, Mass. & TAIPEI, Taiwan, Jul 24, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) ----Insyde Software, a leading provider of Universal Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) based firmware, BIOS and engineering services today announced the availability of its InsydeH2O(TM) UEFI firmware solution for the Intel(R) EP80579 Integrated Processor product line. With the release of this latest version of InsydeH2O, Insyde Software continues to add to their already broad UEFI BIOS portfolio with Intel compatibility.
The Intel(R) EP80579 Integrated Processor product line integrates several key system components into single Intel(R) Architecture-based chips. These Intel system-on-a-chip (SOCs) deliver significant improvements in power-efficient throughput performance and form factor by reducing the chip footprint size by up to 45 percent and power consumption by up to 30 percent, compared to a standard four-chip design in embedded and communications market segments.
"Intel's product gives our customers a compelling SOC design choice for their next family of embedded devices," said Jonathan Joseph, Executive Vice President of Insyde Software. "InsydeH2O continues to enable our customers' innovations on Intel Architecture with UEFI technology."
"The Intel EP80579 product line provides an attractive solution for customers that require fast time-to-market on products requiring high levels of integration, low power and a small form factor," said Rose Schooler, general manager, Embedded Performance Products Division, Intel.
Insyde Software, along with their partner ADI Engineering, will showcase several demonstrations of InysdeH2O support of the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor product line at the upcoming Intel(R) Developer Forum (IDF) being held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, August 19-21, 2008
