Just as your pulse is checked during a routine physical, free cash flow is used as an indicator of a company's health. It equals the cash brought in from operations minus the money needed to pay the bills. Think about leftover money in your checking account after you pay this month's bills.
Investors and analysts see this leftover money as a gauge of a company's ability to perform. It is available for transactions such as handing out dividends and working on new products.
Some argue free cash flow is wrongly overshadowed by the emphasis often placed on earnings. Earnings numbers can be manipulated and don't always tell the whole story -- and earnings don't mean much if there's nothing left over after a company pays its expenses. Even if you bring in a six-figure salary, but no money left after paying the bills, are you in great financial shape?
You don't have to be Einstein to figure out free cash flow. To calculate the number, subtract the company's expenditures and dividends from its operating cash flow.
If the free cash flow is written in red ink, it doesn't necessarily signal curtains. This is common for young companies looking to grow. It also could be a result of heavy investments, which in the long run could be worth a standing ovation.

India's Leading Credit Rating Firm Switches to Entrust IdentityGuard
Comtex
DALLAS, Jun 11, 2008 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) ----
<< Agreement allows CRISIL to deploy more efficient, cost-effective strong authentication for mobile workforce >>
India's leading credit rating, research, risk and policy advisory company, CRISIL, required a more efficient, cost-effective solution to secure their remote users. To solve the challenge and enable secure communication with their mobile workforce, Entrust, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENTU) and partner IndusFace Consulting deployed the Entrust IdentityGuard versatile authentication platform and one-time-passcode (OTP) tokens.
"The Entrust IdentityGuard authentication platform provided us with a cost-effective solution to extend two-factor authentication capabilities to many more remote access users than was previously possible," said CRISIL Chief Technology Officer Hiren Shah. "What we specifically liked about the Entrust IdentityGuard solution was the choice of having the option to deploy multiple types of tokens."
CRISIL cited the comprehensive cost-benefit of Entrust's strong authentication solution in terms of initial investment and recurring long-term costs as the main reasons behind adopting the solution. The platform's dynamic multifactor authentication capabilities enable the organization to provide its employees a variety of authenticators, as necessary.
"A trusted firm in India, CRISIL recognized the capabilities of hardware tokens, but traditional token offerings were often too expensive for the organization, which strives for a security strategy that is both efficient and cost-effective," said Entrust Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Conner. "Particularly as a means to authenticate a mobile workforce, Entrust IdentityGuard tokens represent an affordable alternative for organizations seeking a high level of security provided by one-time-passcode tokens but haven't been able to justify the cost -- until now."
The agreement, facilitated by IndusFace Consulting, displaced CRISIL's previous token vendor for the Entrust IdentityGuard versatile authentication platform -- a key component of strong layered security strategy -- and $5 Entrust IdentityGuard Mini Tokens to help protect their valuable corporate resources from external breach.
IndusFace Consulting Chief Technology Officer Ashish Tandon added, "Our in-depth knowledge in deploying Entrust solutions in heterogeneous environments made it possible for us to successfully implement the entire Entrust IdentityGuard solution, as well as meet all project timelines to perfection and customer satisfaction for CRISIL. It has been our privilege to work with CRISIL and we remain committed to customer service and satisfaction."
Entrust IdentityGuard enables organizations to layer security -- according to access requirements or the risk of a given transaction -- across diverse users and applications. The platform's authentication options include username and password, IP-geolocation, machine/device, questions and answers, out-of-band one-time passcode (delivered via voice, SMS or e-mail), grid cards and a range of one-time-passcode tokens -- priced as low as $5 each. Entrust IdentityGuard also provides multiple methods of supporting mutual authentication, including picture and caption replay.
The Entrust IdentityGuard solution helps organizations minimize operational challenges such as burden to help desks and infrastructure maintenance. It includes a complete Web-based administration capability for user and policy management, enabling organizations to easily distribute administrative tasks to the right individuals, all based on role.
A Standard and Poor's Company, CRISIL offers domestic and international customers a unique combination of local insights and global perspectives, delivering independent information, opinions and solutions that help them make better informed business and investment decisions, improve the efficiency of markets and market participants, and help shape infrastructure policy and projects.
