Dell To Enter Smart Phone Market in China, Brazil

Round Rock, Tex.-based PC-maker Dell (DELL) released a confirmation of its plans to enter the smart phone market, Friday.
The company plans to debut its Mini 3 smart phones in China and Brazil, using carriers China Mobile in China and Claro, in Brazil, according to a release.
“Our entry into the smart phone category is a logical extension of Dell’s consumer product evolution over the past two years,” said Ron Garriques, President, Dell Global Consumer Group in a statement. “We are developing smaller and smarter mobile products that enable our customers to take their internet experience out of the home and do the things they want to do whenever and wherever they want."
The Mini 3 smart phones use the Android operating system. Dell expects the phones to be available through China Mobile in late November and through Claro by the end of the year.
The company said it also has agreements with telecom companies like Vodafone in Europe, Australia and New Zealand; U.S. mobile giants AT&T and Verizon; Singapore carriers M1 and Starhub; and Malaysian carrier Maxis.
In addition Dell has existing agreements with other leading global telecom providers, including Vodafone in Europe; Australia/New Zealand, AT&T and Verizon in the U.S.; M1 and Starhub in Singapore; and Maxis in Malaysia, creating more opportunities to meet the needs of a connected lifestyle.
Shares of Dell fell five cents or 0.32% in Friday’s session, closing at $15.40 a share.
